Robert J. Brotherton, 82, of Clinton died peacefully on Saturday, November 24, 2023, at his home.
He was born on November 6, 1941, in Montour Falls, NY, a son of the late James and Virginia Ward Brotherton. Robert graduated from SUNY Oswego with a degree in Industrial Arts. He married the late Sally Higgins on January 27, 1967, in Sauquoit. Robert worked at New York Mills Union Free School and Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES for over 30 years. During his tenure as an Industrial Arts teacher, he also was a Drivers’ Ed instructor at various schools in the area.
During his free time, he enjoyed collecting and showing antique cars. Additionally, he was a master woodworker who designed and built a variety of fine furniture. In the 1980’s and 90’s he honed his talents and opened his own business, The Wood Shop in Clinton, which moved later to Westmoreland.
After retirement he spent time designing and building detailed wooden car models. His creations were featured in numerous hobby magazines.
Robert also enjoyed reading about history and maintained a particular interest in the American Civil War and WWII throughout his lifetime.
He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Brotherton, and son-in-law Khalid Nethagani and his sister-in-law Elizabeth Higgins of CA. Robert is predeceased by his brother, Richard Brotherton.
The services will be held privately and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are with Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd, New Hartford.
