Mary Lourdes (Contento) Barker

NEW HARTFORD – With profound sorrow and enduring love, the family of Mary announces her passing on May 21st, surrounded by the love of those who meant the most to her. She faced life with quiet strength, grace, and unwavering devotion to her family, leaving behind a legacy of love that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.

Mary was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother (“Banga”), sister, aunt, and friend whose kindness touched so many lives.  She had a gentle and caring spirit, always putting others before herself and making everyone feel welcomed and loved. Nothing brought her greater happiness than her family, who were truly the center of her world. Being surrounded in her kitchen by her family on Sunday while she served one of her delicious meals always brought her joy. Her grandchildren, Colden & Emie, were the light of her life, and she found immense joy in sharing cherished traditions with them, especially making homemade cannoli together in the kitchen “Banga” loved so dearly.

Mary was a proud graduate of Utica Catholic Academy and Buffalo State University, where she laid the foundation for her lifelong commitment to education. She devoted her career to teaching American history and psychology in the Utica City School District, inspiring generations of students with her knowledge, compassion, and encouragement. One of her greatest joys was encountering former students in the community, where she was often greeted with warmth, gratitude, and appreciation that meant so much to her. Those moments meant a great deal to her and reflected the lasting impact she had on so many lives.

She will be remembered for her warmth, compassion, resilience, and the countless small ways she showed her love each day. Her thoughtful messages, comforting presence, and steady support were gifts to everyone fortunate to know her. The love and guidance she gave so freely will continue to live through her family and all whose lives she touched.

Mary is survived by her husband Laurence Barker; daughters Lauren Mowers (Ryan) and Alaina Barker; grandchildren, Colden and Emie Mowers; sister, Sandy Kenny (Robert); brother-in-law and sisters-in-law Donald Barker (Mary), Kathy Metott (Dennis), Karen Lazer (Raphael); cousins, Pauline Read (Charles) and Kathy Wells and many nieces and nephews. Mary shared a special and enduring friendship with Lisa, whose unwavering love, support, and companionship remained a constant and meaningful part of her life. She was also blessed with the lifelong friendships of Pat, Jean, Nadia, Grace and JoAnn, whose laughter, loyalty, and cherished memories brought her great joy through the years.

She was predeceased by her parents Albert Contento and Jane Paparella (Contento) Falvo; step-father Louis Falvo; and brother Joseph Contento.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Alicia Detraglia and the staff at MVHS Cancer Center along with Dr. Ginger Gardner (Memorial Sloan Kettering) for their care and compassion.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Mary’s Mass of Christian Burial and Celebration of Life, which will commence on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John The Evangelist Church, 66 Oxford Road, New Hartford. Arrangements are with Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford.
