Alfred W. Schulz, 89, of New Hartford, passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at the Masonic Care Community with his devoted and loving wife and children by his side.

He was born on September 21, 1932, in Utica, a son of the late Carl and Harriet Green Schulz. Al graduated from New Hartford High School in 1951. On August 23, 1954, Al married Ruth Miller at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in New Hartford, a loving marriage of over 66 years. Al and his brother Gib owned and operated Schulz’s Market, previously owned by their father Carl in South Utica, until 1980. He then worked in various positions for the New Hartford Central School District and then retired from the New Hartford Public Library at 80 years old.

Al was an active member of the New Hartford Fire Department where he served for 19 years as a volunteer firefighter. He was past President of the NHFD Benevolent Association and dedicated the new firehouse in 1973. Al was also a member of the South Utica Drum Corp. in his younger days living on Melrose Ave.

Al enjoyed bowling, golfing with Ashmore, O’Toole and McEvoy (quite the foursome!), hunting, fishing, and taught his family how to alpine ski, spending our winter weekends at Oak Mountain. There was no time more endearing in our hearts of spending summers at camp on the north shore of Oneida Lake with all his family. Al and Gib built a log cabin, 8 Point Lodge, Morehouseville, NY where they spent over 60 years hunting the very elusive white tail deer on the Salisbury Trail. We raise our glass (of UC) to a life well lived. “UC, you will never get a better headache” as Dad always said!

He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth of New Hartford; his children Nancy (Steven) Hartmann of New Hartford, Susan (Joseph) Mahaney of New Hartford, Elisabeth Schulz (Mike Parkin) Vienna, NY and Eric (Laurie) Schulz of Lake Placid; grandchildren, Andrew and Katherine Hartmann, Bethany (John) Gonzalez, Christopher (Kimberly) Mahaney, Nicholas (Allie Liesch) Mahaney, Brian and Peter McGee, Karl and Scott Schulz; great grandchildren, Benicio, Mia, Lukas, Ruth and Elaine and so many loving nieces and nephews; sister and brother-in-law Anne and Bob Berner and Dory Miller. Besides his parents, Al was predeceased by his brother Gilbert P. Schulz; sister Norma J. Moles; a special nephew, Peter H. Moles; sister-in-law Marilyn Stiefvater and brother-in-law Bud Miller.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to all of the staff in the Woodgate and Raquette Neighborhoods at Masonic Care, as well as Drs. Erim and McCormick for all wonderful care given to Al.

A celebration of Al’s life will be on Friday at 2:00pm at the Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford. Calling hours will be from 12:00pm to 2:00pm prior to the funeral service. Interment will be at the convenience of family in Crown Hill Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, please consider the New Hartford Fire Department or the New Hartford Public Library in memory of Al.
