Obituary

Wynema “Rusty” Pentland, 93, of Utica, NY died on August 8, 2025 at the Masonic Care Community

She was born October 21, 1931, in Lenore, WV, to French and Elizabeth Hankins Smith, and educated in West Virginia schools. She worked as a dental assistant in WV for two years before coming to Utica in 1952.

She married A. William “Bill" Pentland in February 1954, in Stittville, NY. Bill died March 18, 2024. Before her marriage, and in the early years, she worked in data entry at Utica National Insurance Co. She left in 1957 to start her family. After 19 years and three children, she went back to work for 15 more years, retiring in 1991 from the Methods/Manuals Department.

Mrs. Pentland was a member of Central Methodist Church for 40 years, Christ Community Church for 10 years, and her last years were spent at Zion Lutheran Church. Rusty volunteered with the church, the schools her children attended, Boy and Girl Scouts, and the Masonic Home.

She is survived by her son Thomas and daughter-in-law Cynthia of Gold Hill, OR; daughter Brenda of Rochester, NY; granddaughters Kristen Lycett of MD and Elizabeth Pentland of OR; and a sister, Analee Maeland of WV. She was predeceased by her husband Bill; a son, Michael; her parents; two brothers, James and Robert; and four sisters, Elmo, Helen, Sarah Ann, and Mary.

The family would like to thank the Masonic Care Community Rehabilitation department.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Townsend Cemetery, Stittville.
