Theodore F. Thomas MD, 1924 – 2018

Dr. Thomas, 93, peacefully passed away March 11, 2018 at the Presbyterian Home, New Hartford.

He was born in Oswego, N.Y., Aug. 24, 1924, the first born of Edna Farrington and William H. Thomas.

He graduated from the Oswego High School in June 1942. He enrolled in Cornell University, graduating with his MD in March of 1948.
After 2 years medical residency training in Hartford Hospital, Hartford Connecticut, 2 years of active duty in the United States Air Force as a captain, and 3 years residency training in Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, N.Y., he entered the private practice of internal medicine in association with Dr. James W. W. Dimon and Dr. Gerald Jones in Utica. He then moved his practice to 95 Genesee St. New Hartford, associated with Dr. Fel Davies, and practiced there until September of 1989. He became a fellow of the American College of Physicians in 1964, president of the Oneida Co. Medical Society 1961, president of the Academy of Medicine 1960. He served as president of the Faxton Hospital medical staff, .and was a member of the AMA.

He married Jessie Mackenzie MacLeod 11/26/50. They raised five children and had some 43 blessed years together, traveling when possible over much of the world. They were members of the New Hartford Presbyterian Church Jessie was lost to cancer in 1993 after an 8 year fight. Theodore met his second love in the Tramp and Trail Club of Utica, marrying Barbara Ida Lockwood Capron 3/11/95. They made a home in Sauquoit and had many great trips together, locally and globally.

He was a member of the New Hartford Presbyterian Church. He was a long time member of the Tramp and Trail Club of Utica, serving as president in 1994 and 1995, then treasurer for many years. With Barbara, he climbed the 46 highest peaks in the Adirondacks thus becoming a member of the “46ers Club”. He enjoyed several hobbies over the years, including hunting and fishing. Early in adulthood he dabbled in taxidermy, mounting several small animals and birds. He enjoyed taking watercolor classes with Ralph Murray. His interest in photography started in childhood with a box camera, then a baby Brownie, and continued on through today’s digital cameras.

He was very active until his last few years, spending 2017 in the Presbyterian nursing home where he had cared for patients years earlier. He is survived by his wife Barbara, her daughter Regina and her children/grandchildren, Theodore’s five children: Jerry, Richard, Christine, Roderick, and Lynn, and their spouses, their four children, his sister Kathryn Brown in Florida and many nieces and nephews. His brother William F. Thomas of Oswego preceded him in 1987.
