Suzanne S. Bowley, a woman defined by her lifelong service to others and her adventurous spirit, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026, at the Abraham House of Rome at the age of 79 years old. Born in Utica on January 5, 1947, to the late Thomas A. and Priscilla G. Smith, Suzanne grew up in New Hartford, graduating from the New Hartford Central School System.

Suzanne’s professional life was a profound testament to her devotion to others. Her journey in public service began at Marcy State Hospital in 1970 and flourished through her years with the Central New York Developmental Disabilities Services Office (DDSO). Retiring in 2009, she concluded a distinguished career that spanned nearly four decades of unwavering commitment. Beyond her work, she remained a steadfast and faithful member of the New Hartford First United Methodist Church.

Since joining the Oneida Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in 2012, Sue became a pillar of the organization, serving in various leadership roles, including Chapter Treasurer and, most recently, as Vice Regent for the Skenandoah Chapter, where she previously stepped in as Regent during a vital transition. Her extensive service reached across the region through her involvement with the Fort Stanwix Chapter, the Fort Schuyler Chapter Children of the American Revolution, and the DAR Central New York Round Table. Whether she was traveling to the annual Continental Congress in Washington, D.C., or representing the DAR in local parades, Sue’s dedication to veterans and the mission of historic preservation was matched only by the deep bonds she formed with her "DAR sisters," who will fondly remember her contagious laughter and tireless volunteer spirit.

An intrepid and fearless traveler, Suzanne explored the world from Japan to Israel, once tracing the footsteps of her ancestors through England and Scotland. Whether she was finding peace along the shores of Hawaii or Maine, or cheering loudly for the New England Patriots and the Buffalo Bills, she lived with enthusiasm and gusto. Above all, she cherished her family.

Of all the roles Suzanne embraced, none brought her more joy than being a grandmother. Grant, Grace, and Christina were the true lights of her life and her greatest treasures. She adored them beyond measure, pouring her heart into every moment spent with them and finding immense pride in their every achievement. Whether she was sharing stories of their family history or simply enjoying their company, her love for them was unconditional and ever-present. Her legacy of adventure, laughter, and compassion will live on most vibrantly through them, as they were the center of her world.

She is survived by her son, Robert Clifton Bowley, and his children, Grant, Grace, and Christina; her brother, David Smith, his wife, Deborah, and their daughter, Aimee; her cousin, Laura Branch; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, her aunt Helen Blumenstock, and her cousin Lee Holbrook LeRoy.

The family expresses their deepest thanks to the staff at Abraham House of Rome for their tender and dedicated care in her final days. Following Suzanne’s wishes, services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Abraham House of Rome.

Arrangements are in the care of Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, New Hartford.
