Richard (Dick) H. Longley, 75, of Sauquoit and formerly of Durhamville, went home to the Lord, Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born on January 1, 1947, in Rome, NY to W. Eileen and William A. Longley. He graduated from Oneida High School and attended SUNY Geneseo for one year. Dick then worked at Oneida Ltd and Comstock Lumber prior to being drafted into the United States Army in December 1966. He served in the 3rd Armored Division FRG until November 1969 and reached rank Spec 5 as a redeployment clerk. Dick then worked as a toll collector for the New York State Thruway Authority from 1970 until he retired in 2002. He married the love of his life, Kate Sherman, on March 18, 2006 at Historic Old St. John’s in Utica, NY.

Growing up, Dick enjoyed playing baseball for Durhamville little league and continued to play for the men’s team. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the Syracuse University men’s basketball team. He regularly participated in tennis matches and rounds of golf with many of his friends. However, he was happiest when he was at his home either working in his garden or playing with his grandchildren. He also created many cherished memories vacationing in New Smyrna Beach, Florida in the winter and relaxing at the St. Lawrence River in the summer. His most proud accomplishment was his over 40 years of sobriety that he achieved through his regular involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous.

He is survived by his wife Kate and his eight step-children whom he loved as his own, Todd Greer, Tammy (Vinny) Guarno, Kelly (Jerry) Savicki, Melissa (Mike) Bartoletti, Sarah (Joe) Bono, Megan (Dave) Sergott, Amanda (Jasen) Catalfamo, Courtney (Ben) Farnham and 16 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Robert (Pat), brother-in-law, Dave Geary and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Kathy Geary.

The family would thank Dr. Detraglia and all the nursing staff from Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare for their care over the past few years.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Dick’s Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of Life which will be held June 10th 2022, at 10:30 at St. Anthony’s St. Patrick’s Parish in Chadwicks, NY with Father Robert Weber and Deacon Jim Henck officiating. There will be an opportunity to greet the family at the conclusion of the service. A burial will be held following at Forest Hill Cemetery, 2201 Oneida St. Utica NY. The needs of the family have been entrusted to the care of the Friedel Williams & Edmunds Funeral & Cremation Services.
