Raymond D. Philo, 91, of New Hartford and Old Forge, N.Y., passed away on August 17, 2025, surrounded by family.

Ray was born on November 25, 1934, the son of Leo and Dorthy Philo. He grew up in Washington Mills and spent a considerable amount of time at the family summer home in Old Forge. He graduated from New Hartford High School where he was known as an accomplished athlete, especially on the baseball field and basketball court.

Upon graduation from High School Ray enlisted in the United States Army where he served during the Koren Conflict and received the National Defense Service Medal. One of Ray’s favorite memories of his Army Service was while stationed at Fort Eustis, Virginia, he served in the same Company as Willie Mays and often played catch with him on their off time. At this time Willie Mays was not a world-renowned baseball player that he would eventually become. Upon discharge from the Army Ray continued his education by attending Mohawk Vally Community College.

Ray was very active in the New Hartford and Old Forge Communities, dedicating his volunteer activities to the Willowvale Fire Company, the New Hartford Volunteer Fire Department, and the Old Forge Volunteer Fire Department. He was also active for many years as a coach for New Hartford Little League, and New Hartford Pop Warner Football.

Ray was a well-known local businessman who was active in many civic organizations including the New Hartford Jaycees, the Northwood Masonic Lodge # 849 in Old Forge, N.Y., and attended the New Hartford Presbyterian Church. Ray was married to Carol Murphy, a blessed union of over 50 years. Carol predeceased Ray in 2023.

Ray is survived by his children; Deborah Green (Bernard), Robert Philo (Sue), and Raymond, and his stepdaughters Deborah Dodge and Sue Minio. He also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Kim, Allison, Christopher, Patrick, Katie, and Aaron. Surviving are also great-grandchildren; Jack, Ellie, Laeklyn, Kieran, Jordan, Austin and Jack. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law: Patricia Philo (Florida), and Janet Schoen (Whitesboro), along with numerous nieces and nephews. Ray was predeceased by his two brothers David Philo, and Gerald Philo.

The family would like to recognize and thank the caregivers at the Masonic Home (Troy Household) and the Healthcare Workers at Winn Hospital for their excellent care during Ray’s last days.

At Ray’s request there are no calling hours and a private memorial service with Military Honors will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Road in New Hartford.
