Obituary

Karen Elizabeth Keyes Hnat, 79, of New Hartford, passed away, April 21, 2021 with her daughter at her side.

She was the daughter of James and Marion Keyes. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother James Keyes, Jr..

Karen grew up in Utica. She went to LPN School and later graduated as an RN from MVCC in 1975. Karen worked for more than 20 years at St Elizabeth Hospital, most of those years in the ICU.

She married her hero, Richard Hnat on October 8, 1988. The shared 27 years together before his passing in March of 2015.

Her greatest passion was supporting and speaking out for women’s rights. She enjoyed Kayaking, Hiking and the beauty of the Adirondacks. She was also an avid Utica College Hockey Fan.

She is survived by her special daughter Deborah Griffith who always brought her such great joy and her treasured dog Bella, she also leaves her stepchildren, Christine Mussato, Darlene Klemm, Brian Hnat, Alan Hnat and their families; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law Delores and Tom Hnat and family and a niece Audrey Novak and many friends who will miss her dearly.

The family would like to say a special thanks to the staff of St. Elizabeth MVHS special care unit, Dr. Fred Talarico and Pat Rosati, RNP for their wonderful care.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 AM at the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary. Face Masks, Social Distancing and signing Contract Tracing forms will be required. There are no calling hours.
