Janet L. Barnes, 95, of Whitesboro, passed away on September 24, 2025 in her home in Fayetteville with her loving daughters by her side.
She was born on July 10, 1930, in North Adams, MA, the daughter of the late Ralph W. and Mabel Williams Lloyd. Janet graduated from Drury High School in North Adams and Bay Path Junior College in Longmeadow, MA. In 1953, she married Norman Barnes in the First Baptist Church of North Adams. They were married for 57 years.
Janet was a devoted member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. She served as Director of the Girl’s Guild at Keuka College for five years, was a volunteer at Hope House, the chair of the New York State Outdoor Ministries Team overseeing two American Baptist camps in New York and was President of the New York State American Baptist Women’s Ministries from 1992–1995. Her service to American Baptist Women and Girls spanned more than 65 years.
Janet was a resident of Maple Downs, Fayetteville, NY for 7 years. She participated in the Book Club, weekly religious services and served on the Residence Committee.
She is survived by her three daughters Patricia Toukatly of Liverpool, Carolyn Mawhorter ( Steven) of Shaker Heights, OH, and Rev. Dr. Marcia Bailey of Collegeville, PA. She also leaves behind ten grandchildren, Andrew Toukatly (Janelle), Matthew Toukatly (Patricia), Kathryn Miller (Joshua), Mary Beth Nagengast (Wil); Christopher Mawhorter (Hannah), Michael Mahorter (Grace), Jennifer Lloyd (Emilie); Sarah Bailey, Adam Bailey, and Thomas Bailey (Hanna); as well as 18 great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday November 8 at 1:30PM at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 13 Clark Pl, Utica, NY, with an opportunity to greet the family following service. A private interment will take place at Crown Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum.
