Gladys Arlene Hoffman, 100, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 29, 2025, at the Lutheran Home in Southbury, CT.
She was born on February 9, 1925, in Utica, NY, the daughter of the late Herbert and Ruth (Gifford) Wentworth. Gladys graduated from the University of Rochester School of Nursing in 1946. On December 7, 1946, she was united in marriage to Robert Kenneth Hoffman in the Clinton United Methodist Church, Clinton, NY. Together they shared a devoted union of more than 68 years until Robert’s passing on February 14, 2015.
Gladys worked as a Registered Nurse at Greenwich Hospital and, throughout her life, carried a deep commitment to caring for others. Her husband’s career took them to Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Campinas, Brazil, where Gladys dedicated herself to volunteering with various community organizations.
Faith was a central part of her life. She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cos Cob, CT, where she taught Sunday School and shared her faith with children of the parish.
Talented with her hands and eye for detail, Gladys was an accomplished seamstress. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and knitting, and especially cherished passing these skills on to her daughter. Her creativity and craftsmanship were a source of joy to her family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Paul Hoffman of Greenfield, MA, and Cynthia Hoffman of Brooklyn, NY; and her granddaughter, Lydia Booz, daughter of Cynthia. She was predeceased by her son, Robert Hoffman, Jr., and her siblings, Garnet Berg, Dorothy Leslie, and Harold Wentworth.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Lutheran Home in Southbury for the compassionate and exceptional care provided to Gladys.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 26, at 1:30 p.m. at Crown Hill Memorial Park. Arrangements are with Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford.
