George A. Spinella, 91, of New Hartford, passed away, April 13, 2018 at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare, with his family at his side.

He was born December 30, 1926, in Utica, the son of Angelo and Grace Maiurano Spinella and graduated from New Hartford High School. He served in the US Army during World War II in Okinawa.

George married Barbara Barkett, in October of 1953, a loving union of 61 years until her death on April 15, 2015.

He owned and operated a well-known area company, George Spinella Excavating, for 45 years until his retirement, which then continued to be operated by his son until his retirement in 2017.

He was a member of the New Hartford American Legion Post # 1376.

George was an avid gardener and received much enjoyment from tending to his gardens. He enjoyed golfing and fishing and making wine with his good friend John D’Amore. His greatest enjoyment was the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law George and Karen Spinella of New Hartford; his grandchildren, George (Kelly) Spinella, Thomas (Ana) Spinella, Daniel (Emily) Spinella, Jenelle (John) Hammill, and Breanna Kalies and fiancé Max Darman; four great-grandchildren Teagan Spinella, Alexander, Madeline and Delaney Hammill; his sister Mary Pugh of New Hartford with whom he shared a close relationship and especially enjoying their trips to the casino. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Dominick, Joseph, John, Angelo and Anthony and his sisters Rose and Grace

The family wishes extend their sincere thanks to the staff of Faxton-St. Luke’s ICU and the entire Neuro-Vascular staff for all of the care and compassion for George. The also wish to thank Joe, Sue and Katie Elsenbeck and Artie and Phyllis Ellisfor their frequent visits, which George found very enjoyable.

Funeral Services will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Interment will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare for their ICU.
