Eloise Steele Culyer, resident of the Presbyterian Home, died February 11, 2018.

She was born in Nettleton, Arkansas in 1924 to Sophronia (Lunsford) and Roger Steele. She graduated from Monette High School and attended Arkansas State. Her family life in Arkansas remained important to her throughout her lifetime.

She was married in 1946 to Robert Piercy Culyer of Port Chester, New York. While living in Utica, Eloise started a nursery school in the family home’s basement. She taught neighborhood children for several years, picking them up and taking them home in the family station wagon. After closing her school, she raised her children, played golf, gardened, taught Sunday school classes, held church offices, played tennis and curled. Eventually, the family made their way to Hartford Terrace in New Hartford, where they lived for over 50 years. One of her greatest pleasures was laughing at herself when the family was together.

The Culyers were members of the Yahnundasis Country Club for 60 years, the Utica Curling Club, and the New Hartford Presbyterian Church.

Eloise is survived by her children, Candace (Thomas) Twynham, Lynda (Timothy) Moore, and Robert (Linda) Culyer Jr. She leaves six grandchildren, Timothy (Elizabeth) Moore, Andrew (Lauryn) Moore, Katherine (Nicholas) Paben, Lauren Culyer, Robert (Nicole) Culyer, and Rachel (Russell) Potenski. There are two great-grandchildren, Brady and Sarah Moore, and one new Culyer on the way.

A private service has been planned by her family. Arrangements are with the Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, New Hartford.

If friends would like to make a memorial contribution in her name, the family would be pleased if donations were sent to the New Hartford Presbyterian Church, 45 Genesee Street, New Hartford, New York 13413.
