Obituary

Dorothy A. Hayes, 87, of New Hartford, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025, at Sitrin Nursing Home.

Born on May 14, 1938, in Clinton, NY, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Raymond and Dorothy (Glover) Smith. On March 21, 1960, she married the love of her life, the late Harry N. “Deacon” Hayes. Together, they shared many wonderful years until his unexpected passing in 1998.

Dorothy worked for many years as an owner and cook at Cruise In Diner, where her warmth and friendly spirit touched countless lives. She was also an active member of the New Hartford Auxiliary and Fire Department, contributing her time and energy to her community.

Dorothy will be remembered for her love of bingo, slot machines, and the deep devotion she had for her family. Her laughter, warmth, and love will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.

Known affectionately as “Gunga,” Dorothy’s greatest joy in life was her family. She absolutely cherished her grandchildren, who were truly her world. 

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Lynn Pritchard (Will); son, Raymond Hayes; grandchildren, McKenzie Pritchard (Ryan) and CJ Pritchard (Destiny); her sister, Joan Sgroi; and her dear friend Liz, who was like a daughter to her. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Raymond and Dorothy (Glover) Smith; her husband, Harry N. Hayes; her sister, Betty Stanburge; and her brother Francis Hofmeister.

The family extends a heartfelt thanks to the staff in the Rehab Unit at Sitrin Nursing Home for their compassionate care and kindness.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 12:00 p.m. at Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd, New Hartford, with Father Matt Rawson officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, 9722 Cemetery Rd, Cassville.
