Donald S. Baum, Jr., 88, of Utica, passed away on Friday, December 26, 2025, at his home.
He was born on March 15, 1937, in Utica, a son of the late Donald S. Baum, Sr. and Katherine (Dorr) Baum. Donald was a graduate of Utica Free Academy and continued his education at Mohawk Valley Community College, Nichols College, and Brandeis University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree.
In 1962, Donald married Joan Walters at Tabernacle Church in Utica. He worked as a mechanical engineer with General Electric, serving at locations in Utica; Lynchburg, VA; and Stuarts Draft, Virginia. He later worked for Data General in Westboro, Massachusetts. After returning to Utica, Donald opened Northgate Support Sports in North Utica.
Donald was a member of Tabernacle Church and was actively involved in his communities. At one time, he was a member and president of the Lynchburg Jaycees and belonged to the Young Republican Club in Lynchburg, VA.
Donald greatly enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid cyclist and runner. He competed in numerous cycling races and ran the New York City Marathon, the Boston Marathon, and the Disney Half Marathon.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joan Baum of Utica; his children, Gregory Baum of Utica, Kevin Baum and his partner Anabela Rego of Hudson, Massachusetts, Lynda (Lynn) Truelove of Oklahoma, and Donna (Bill) Brown of Utica; his grandchildren, Steven (Tammy) Baum, Taryn Baum, Paige Law, Stephanie Baum, Justin Baum, Alex Copage, Daniel Copage, and Keirsten (Jose) Hernandez; and his seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in West Schuyler Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are entrusted to Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Road, New Hartford.
