Obituary

Barbara Joan Canter, 91, of New Hartford, died Thursday April 29, 2021 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born February 16, 1930 in Utica, a daughter of Charles F. Canter and Grace (Bailey) Canter. She graduated from Utica Free Academy in 1948.

Barbara worked for a number of years at New York Central Railroad and then at Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation until her retirement.

Ms. Canter was a member of the New Hartford Presbyterian Church and participated in their sewing circle. She created many beautiful items through knitting, crocheting, cross stitching and sewing. She was an avid reader, bird watcher and lover of dogs.

She is survived by two nephews, S. Garth Cummings and his wife Della of Bridgewater, and Bruce E. Wilcox and his wife Victoria, of Bloomsburg, PA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Dorothy Wilcox and Jessie Cummings, niece Barbara (Wilcox) Landesman, and nephew Brent Cummings.

The family would like to thank the medical staff of St. Luke’s Hospital and Jessie Smiles for their recent gentle care.

The funeral will be on Thursday at 11:00 at the Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford. Interment will be Crown Hill Memorial Park. Calling hour will be from 10:00 to 11:00 prior to the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to make memorial donations to the Stevens-Swan Humane Society, 5664 Horatio St., Utica, NY 13502.
