NEW HARTFORD - Alma Joan Scheidelman, 97, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on May 15, 2025, at the Charles T. Sitrin Health Care Center.
She was born in Utica on July 20, 1927, the youngest child of James and Rose Ouimette O’Connor and throughout her entire life had fond memories of growing up at 2 Jones Place, Yorkville. She attended Whitesboro schools, The Academy of the Holy Name in Rome, and SUNY Canton. At one time she was married to L.C. “Shy” Scheidelman.
Alma was employed in the business offices of Utica and Marcy state hospitals for over 20 years, retiring in 1988, in part so that she could attend her grandchildren’s sports and musical events. She also began a second career in the antiques business with a shop in Little Falls. She also did the August Madison-Bouckville Antique Show and traveled to Greensboro, NC, for semiannual antique shows. What she enjoyed most about the antiques business was making new friends.
She also enjoyed cooking, swimming at the YWCA in Utica and the YMCA in Rome, playing bridge and golf, watching the Boilermaker each year from her favorite spot at the corner of the Parkway and Genesee St. and traveling in the U.S., Canada, England, and Ireland. She was proud of her Irish heritage and was fond of Scotty dogs, frogs, and pigs. Alma was a very active person and lived independently into her mid-nineties.
She is survived by children: Trudy Menzzentto, Randleman, NC; Barbara Trevvett, Cold Brook; Maryann Zogby, New Hartford; Jill Tyksinski, Clinton; Paul Scheidelman, Eagle Bay. She was “Granny” to thirteen grandchildren: Jame Mascaro, John Mascaro, David Bertlesman, T.J. Bertlesman, Sara Zogby, Molly King, Stacy Davignon, Adam Tyksinski, Katey Tyksinski, Jake Tyksinski, Jason Scheidelman, Paul Scheidelman, and Alex Scheidelman and twenty-four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her brother, Col. Theodore J. “Ted” O’Connor, her sister, Mary Dedell, a grandson, S.Sgt. Joseph R. Scheidelman, and great grandson, James R. Bertlesman.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at Historic Old St. John’s Church, 240 Bleecker St., Utica, 13501 on Monday, June 2 at 10:00 am. The family will greet friends in the church starting at 9:00 am.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, to please consider Historic Old St. John’s Church or The Rescue Mission, 293 Genesee St., Utica, NY 13501 (or uticamission.org ) which were both meaningful to Alma.
The family is extremely grateful to the entire staff at the Sitrin Health Care Center, especially the staff in the Mulberry Cottage for their loving care of Alma during the past four years.
