TO THE FAMILY OF

Thomas Benton Pauley, II

I am very sad. I'd like to reach out to his family directly.

When I tell my son and grandsons about my experience which inevitably includes memories of Coach, as they fein listening, their eyes glaze over and they tease me. I laugh along with them, thinking of the the fond memories that haven't faded, and describing them.

I've thought about Coach Pauley often over the years. I was the captain of the 1972-1973 New Hartford wrestling team, a team that achieved a top 5 ranking in the state. Coach worked with me after practices 2-3 times per week to perfect moves improve skills that led to my becoming COL champion, team MVP, winner of many tournaments, and Athlete of the Week chose by the local TV station.
His coaching made that possible. I was a starting offensive lineman on the varsity football team a position he coached. This team achieved top 20 ranking in the state, and I went on to play for a nationally ranked college team.

He made me smarter, he was my 7th grade New York State History teacher. He made learning fun, and I never forgot. From time to time I am a visiting lecturer at colleges and universities and a public speaker, and I often rework the material to try to make it fun and engaging as he did.

To the Pauley family, my heart brakes for you. We have lost a truly great man. I say we because he affected so many lives.I was blessed to wrestle for him in the late 70's, and have him as a history teacher.I learned so much about life from him. I still say some of his funny little sayings that he had.
He was like a father to me, always supportive. Although a couple times he had to kick my ass(back when teachers could and I deserved it). May God bless you coach.
Thanks for sticking by me in my hard times.

Dear family of Thomas Pauley I am deeply saddened that Tom passed away and that you must now endure this sorrow. I met Sargent Pauley in the 1960s when we were both enlisted in the 389th Infantry Regiment, US Army Reserves at Burrstone Road in Utica. Tom was an outstanding soldier and teacher and I never forgot about him. Our mission was instructing Active Army recruits at various stages of their basic training. Tom was absolutely dynamic and took to heart the fact that were helping young men, soon going to war, have the best survival skills possible. He was kindly but very effective in teaching both the recruits and his fellow Drill Instructors. His obituary is beautiful and in no way overstates his fine attributes. Your memories will be a solace. Also, please find hope as I have in our loving Creator’s promise to reunite loved ones in paradise without ever having to part again. Rev 21:4 “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” F. Kerns Laurie

Dear Laurie and all of TP's Family,
Our deepest sympathies to you all on Tom's passing. He was an inspiring teacher and coach who loved working with young people and guiding them to success. He had a positive impact on so many students and athletes over his long career in education and coaching. To us, he was a valued friend with a sincere interest in the people who came into his life. Marie and I feel privileged to have been among that number. We will miss Tom, his great sense of humor, his ready smile, and his willingness to give of himself to others. We are thankful that our lives intersected here in New Hartford; we are richer for having known TP. Our prayers are with all of you in your loss of a very special man, who is now free from suffering and at peace. God bless you all.
