Stephen R. Lauterbach, M.D., 52, of Las Vegas, NV passed away unexpectedly on March 19, 2021.

He was born in New Hartford, NY to Margaret Dunn Lauterbach and Richard S. Lauterbach and graduated with honors from New Hartford High School in 1986. He graduated cum laude from Middlebury College in Vermont with high honors in chemistry, and also won the Stromstead Award in chemistry. He attended SUNY Upstate Medical School in Syracuse and received his M.D. with honors in 1994.

Steve completed a residency in general surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY in 1999, and a fellowship in vascular and endovascular surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in 2001.

Steve worked in private practice in Los Angeles, CA for eight years and then returned to Central NY and practiced for an additional seven years. First in Utica, NY and then Binghamton, NY. He then worked as Medical Director for Xablecath, Inc. in Salt Lake City, Utah to promote a new technology focused on improving patient care in the treatment of peripheral vascular disease. Working to improve outcomes and advance treatments for vascular disease, Dr. Lauterbach participated in numerous clinical studies and research during his career and has a long list of publications to his credit. He had a passion to heal and treated each patient as an individual, with dignity and kindness, providing the highest level of care. He was dedicated to training others and supported his clinical teams with laughter and light-heartedness.

Steve also enjoyed golf with an affinity to play on premier courses, and was a voracious reader and history buff, often devouring entire books in one sitting. He was a dedicated Pittsburgh Steelers fan, favored traveling, recently with a special trip to Europe with his son, and loved preparing a savory meal with friends or family. He also had a strong interest in, and became an expert on General George S. Patton. He loved discussing Patton’s life and the military history of that era in extensive detail. Steve had a one-of-a kind, acerbic wit and always made people laugh.

In addition to a plethora of loyal friends and colleagues Steve is survived by his son Theodore (“Ted”) Lauterbach of Los Angeles, CA, mother Margaret Lauterbach and father Richard Lauterbach both of New Hartford, sister Karen von Mantey and husband Henning, and children Shanna, Parker, and Jared Nelson of Atlanta GA, brother Michael Lauterbach, wife Carine, and daughters Sophia and Nina of Westport, CT, sister Ellen Lauterbach and fiancé Tom Duffy of Atlanta, GA. He has one aunt, Barbara Orellana of Marcy, NY and a cousin Rick Orellana, wife Chris, and children Carson, Kimberly and Kira all of Mooresville, NC, as well as his former in-laws Madeline and John Moore of Marco Island, FL. Steve is preceded in death by his sister, Anne Margaret Lauterbach, his niece Taylor Renée Nelson, and his ex-wife Carrie LaPiana.

Services are being postponed due to COVID-19 and will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are with the Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Stephen’s memory to the Massachusetts General Hospital (https://giving.massgeneral.org).
