Obituary

Shirley Mae (Wightman) Spraker, 85, of Sauquoit, died February 13, 2018 at Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare after a courageous battle.

She was born July 16, 1932 in Cooperstown, NY, daughter of Leo and Vera Rose Wightman. She graduated from Richfield Springs Schools class of 1950 and the Utica School of Commmerce. Shirley married Donald Spraker at Schuyler Lake United Methodist Church on September 3, 1953.

She was employed at General Electric, Utica Auto Salvage and retired from Norstar Bank in 1994.

Shirley was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, formerly Central United Methodist Church where she served on many committees and offices over the years. She was also a member of the NYS Covered Bridge Society, the Exeter Historical Society, the Fly Creek Historical Society and the Red Hat Society.

Shirley loved dancing, covered bridges and traveling. Don and Shirley loved round and square dancing, especially at Goodyear Lake with Ernie Russ. She spent years camping as her children were growing up. She and Don also spent 15 winters vacationing in Myrtle Beach, SC.

She is survived by her loving husband Donald of 64years, her daughter Barbara Thompson of Houston, TX, her daughter and son-in-law Susan and Kenneth Keller, of New Hartford; her grandchildren Dustin Thompson, Nicholas and Alexander Keller, great-grandson Dustin Thompson, II, a sister-in-law Eleanor Wightman of Schuyler Lake, and several, nieces and nephews and special friends. She was predecased by her sister and brother-in-law Beverley and Frederick Van Winkler, her brother Willis Wightman, brother-in-law Earlington Spraker.

Calling hours are on Saturday from 2-4 PM at Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford. A funeral service will follow at 4:00 PM. Interment will be in the spring in Sauquoit Valley Cemetery.
