Mary A. Fernandez, 88, of Whitesboro, New York, died at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica on May 5, 2021, due to injuries sustained in a fall at her home. Just before the accident, she could not have been happier while enjoying a long-awaited reunion with her three children.

She was born Mary Anne Moscatello in Manhattan, New York, on April 4, 1933, the seventh and youngest child of Giovannia (Jennie) Cioffi and Augustino Moscatello. In 1959, she married Angelo Fernandez, Col. USMC, who died in 2019.

Mary is survived by her three children: Vincent Fernandez (Linda), Colorado Springs, Colorado; Julia Fernandez (Jerry Razzano), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Alicia (Bob) Dicks of Whitesboro; and three grandchildren: Mark Fernandez of Alpharetta, Georgia; and Meredith and Abigail Dicks of Whitesboro; and many nieces and nephews and friends with whom she shared a life of love and laughter.

In addition to her devotion to her family, she treasured a lifelong appreciation of poetry and classical literature and cultivated a keen interest in politics and current events. Best known as Aunt Chickie to her extended family, she will be remembered by all for her tremendous patience, exquisite ability to never pass judgment and listen to everyone with sincere interest, concern and openheartedness.

Calling hours will be on Monday, May 10, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Road, New Hartford.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to Dunham Public Library, 76 Main Street, Whitesboro, NY, 13492, whitesborolibrary.org.
