NEW YORK MILLS – Joan M. Carville passed peacefully with her loving family by her side on Sunday, April 1, 2018.

Joan was born December 7, 1931 in Utica, the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Nora (Devaney) Carville. She was educated in Utica Schools and attended Utica College. Joan worked as a dial service supervisor in the engineering department of the New York Telephone Company until 1959 when her career was cut short by a devastating work-related automobile accident. She survived thanks to the deep faith and care of her family, especially brothers Jimmy and Tommy, and for the last 37 years, with the devoted care of her brother Fred. Despite her handicaps, Joan enjoyed a life filled with love, faith and family. She was a devoted sister and aunt to her ten siblings and many nieces and nephews, remembering every birthday and anniversary with cards. Joan loved traveling, family gatherings and singing in the annual Carville Family Irish Shows. Her quick wit and joyful spirit endeared her to all who knew her. Joan was a communicant of The Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, and a member of the Catholic Women’s Club of Utica, the New York Telephone Pioneers, and the Heenan Group First Saturday Club.

She is survived by five brothers: Hugh, James, Leo (Doris), Frederick (Marlene), Gerald (Joan); three sisters: Madeline (John) Huss, Aneita Babicz, Carol Byrne; sisters-in-law: Jane and Diane, 39 nieces and nephews, and 92 great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers: Edmond and Thomas; two brothers-in-law: Ronald Babicz and James Byrne; sisters-in-law: Geraldine, Barbara and Jane; niece Sherrie Anne, nephew Timothy, great-nephew Tristan, and dear friend and travel companion, Josephine Berardino.

The family is grateful to Dr. Thomas John, Dr. Tatyana Antonevich, Eucharistic Minister Lucille Costello, Hospice Care, and especially to the staff and caregivers of Oxford Home Care for their many years of loving care for Joan.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 5 from 4 to 7 pm at Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Road, New Hartford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Friday, April 6 at The Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Utica. Interment will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery following the Mass.
