Joan F. Madden, 87, formerly with The Community at Sunset Wood, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 25, 2018 in Needham MA.

She was born on December 31, 1930, in Utica NY, daughter of the late Herbert Leonard and Harriet Stewart Frank. She received her education at Our Lady of Lourdes School and Utica Free Academy subsequently graduating from The College of St. Elizabeth in Morristown NJ.

Joan married Jerome K. Madden on November 27, 1954. Her beloved Jerome passed away June 11th, 1986.

Joan and Jerome spent their married life together raising their family in the Madden family home at 89 Genesee Street, New Hartford, where they were actively involved in the many athletic endeavors of their five children. Together, they were supporters of many community based organizations in New Hartford.

She was employed as a teacher’s aide at the New Hartford Central Schools and later worked at Colozzi’s in the New Hartford Shopping Center.

Joan was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church and served as a volunteer at the New Hartford Public Library.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Christopher and Carleen (Nelson) Madden, of Voorheesville, NY, Jerome and Susan (Brown) Madden of Concord, NH, Andrew and Cynthia (Cleason) Madden of Burnt Hills, NY, Kathleen and Steven Sussman of Needham, MA, Stephen and Karen (Lentz) Madden of Sudbury, MA. Fourteen grandchildren; Kevin Madden, Kristen Lauze, and Kelly Madden; Katharine, Elizabeth and Sarah Madden; Stella Madden; Samuel, Harriet, Maeve, Tess and Cole Sussman; Jakob and Halle Madden. Four great grandchildren; Teddy and Henry Madden; Anna and Benjamin Lauze; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband she was predeceased by her brother John Frank.

Calling hours are on Sunday October 28th from 5-7 PM at the Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford. The funeral will be held on Monday October 29th at 10:30 at St. John the Evangelist Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Waterville immediately following Mass.
