Obituary

Jean Marilyn Roberts Jones passed away peacefully on September 28, 2022 at home, surrounded by her family.

She was born on May 24, 1932, daughter of the late Edward William and Jeanette Cooper Roberts. She graduated from Whitesboro High School, class of 1951. On July 20, 1952, she married Theodore (Tedd) Edward Jones; he died March 21, 1997.

Jean was employed by New York Telephone, starting as a switchboard operator and retiring as a service advisor in 1983. She was very active in the Whitesboro Presbyterian Church, serving as Deacon and in the Presbyterian Women group. For many years Jean was editor of the Communicate, a monthly newsletter of the church.

She was a member of the Maynard Fire Department Auxiliary; Whitesboro Central School Alumni Association; and the First Historical Club of Whitesboro. Her passions included golf (she loved to play; when she stopped playing, she watched the tour every Sunday); and quilting (she belonged to the Mohawk Valley Quilt Club). In every setting, Jean made life-long friends.

A lady who knew her role, Jean enjoyed her life filled with family and friends. Over recent months, she looked forward to being with her husband.

She is survived by her children, Steve (Sherry) of Denver, NC, and Cindy of Marcy, NY; grandchildren, Joshua (Whitney) Jones of Denver, NC, Stephanie (Ray) Briggs of Alexandria, VA, Aaron (Laura) Jones of Englewood, CO, and Maggy (Jeff) Wilson of Denver, NC; great-grandchildren, Jonathon, Parker, Owen, Mason, Emery, Miles, Hadley, Madeline, and Loni; siblings: Beverly Miller of Clinton, and Kent (Michele) Roberts of Whitesboro; brother-in-law, Robert Smolka of Salem, VA; sister-in-law, Peg Jones of Marcy; many cherished nieces and nephews; her dog, Cooper, and cat, Missy Prissy; a special cousin, Patty Delett; and special friends: Gert Hovey, Nancy Forbes, and Gert Murphy. She was predeceased by her husband, Tedd; her parents, Ed and Jeanette Roberts; parents-in-law, Dorothy and Willard Jones; sister, Priscilla Roberts Smolka; in-laws, William “Bill” Miller, Wiley Jones, and Mary and Alex Magnitzky; and a special aunt, Esther Palazzollo.

Special thanks go to her neighbors and friends, Terri and Greg Wood, Keith Halloway, Tim and Debbie Cox, and Diane Wendt; her special caregiver, Ginny Morris; and Deb Armstrong of Hospice.

The funeral will be on Monday, October 3 at 10:00 am at the Whitesboro Presbyterian Church, 1 Elm St., Whitesboro. Interment will be in Carr Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Sunday, October 2 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Road, New Hartford.
