Ferhun H. Soykan, 89, of New Hartford, peacefully passed away in his home on July 26, 2022. At the time of his passing, he was in the company of his wife Kerstin.

Ferhun was born in Izmir, Turkey, on March 19, 1933, son of Rasim Soykan and Huriye Chavas. He was educated in Turkey, and the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. Before coming to the US, he served in the military forces of Turkey.

In 1967 he was united in marriage to Kerstin Utbys, formerly of Sweden. Ferhun was employed by Special Metals Corporation from 1966 until 1996, and a self-employed Engineering Consultant until 2008. He was a member of the Mechanical Engineering Society, and specialized in Vacuum and Metallurgical Engineering.

His true passion was alpine skiing where he could be found ripping double black diamonds in the Adirondack’s or shredding the pow in the Rocky Mountains. His signature technique was a perfect parallel turn.

Ferhun is survived by his wife, Kerstin; two sons, Erik and Altan (Lurah); two grandchildren, Anna and Mia; a sister-in-law, Barbro Larson and nephew, Mats Larson of Sweden and nephews Altan, Aytun; nieces Ayse, Aysun, and Ayten of Turkey.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 4:00 to 6:00pm at the Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford. Interment will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park at the convenience of the family.
