Obituary

Dr. Rekha Anne John, 56, of New Hartford, passed away on December 3, 2021, at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare with her loving family by her side.

Born in Nigeria on May 10, 1965, she is the daughter and eldest child of P.M. and Saramma John. She earned her medical degree from the University of Jos in Nigeria before moving to the United States and completing her pediatric residency at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA in 1993.

Rekha married Dr. Thomas John in 1990. After working as a pediatrician for seven years in Wellsboro, PA, Rekha and her husband planted roots in New Hartford, NY.

Rekha considered it a tremendous privilege to provide medical care to thousands of children in the Mohawk Valley over the past 21 years. Working with families and helping her patients grow up to be happy, healthy, and successful adults gave her a deep sense of satisfaction. She also loved mentoring and working alongside her team and colleagues at the Slocum-Dickson Medical Group Pediatrics Department.

Rekha had a passion for learning about other cultures through cooking and traveling. She frequently experimented with recipes from around the world and enjoyed exploring new places with her family and friends.

A member of the First United Methodist Church of New Hartford, Rekha was a person of deep faith which provided her great joy and comfort throughout her life.

Rekha was a devoted, deeply caring wife and mother. She is survived by her husband Dr. Thomas John; her sons Roshen and Deepak John, all of New Hartford; her mother Saramma John, her brothers John Mathew of Falls Church, VA and John Puthenpurackal of Dallas, TX; her father-in-law and mother-in-law M.P. John and Susan John, and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves her many close friends and co-workers who have supported her through difficult times.

Calling hours are on Wednesday from 11-1 PM at the First United Methodist Church of New Hartford, 105 Genesee St., New Hartford. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM. Interment will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery.
