Dr. Claude E. Stedman, 93, of Rome and Glenfield NY, died on Sunday, July 8, 2018, at the St. Luke’s Home.

He was born on January 25, 1925, in Rome, son of the late George and Jessie Ely Stedman. He graduated from Rome Free Academy, Syracuse University and the University of Penn Dental School in Philadelphia. Claude served as a captain in the US Army during WWII. After the loss of his first wife, Helen McGrath, he married Theodora (Sis) Townsend on April 9, 1964. She died on January 8, 2015 after a loving marriage of nearly 51 years.

Claude was a dentist in Rome for many years. He was a member of the Lake Delta Yacht Club, Mohawk Valley Jazz Society and Griffiss Ski Club. He also enjoyed skiing with his family for many years at Snow Ridge in Turin. After moving to Glenfield, he and his wife enjoyed golfing in Brantingham and cross-country skiing at Whetstone Gulf State Park. Claude will best be remembered for his great sense of humor, love of jazz, and his kind and generous nature toward all people and animals. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Glenfield.

He is survived by his children, Karen Webb of Walnut Creek CA, Richard (Pat) Townsend, Dale (Tim) Kaier, Kathy Russo, all of Rome, Karen (Mike) Semeraro of Utica, 12 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Claudia Stedman, and his brother, Verne Marriott.

Funeral services will be held on August 3, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Mary’s Church in Glenfield. Burial will follow at Old Glendale Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, New Hartford.
